Know your alternative before the offer

A BATNA is the best available alternative if the present negotiation does not produce agreement.

The idea

A BATNA is the best available alternative if the present negotiation does not produce agreement. It is a concrete course of action, not a wish or a threatening phrase. Comparing a proposed agreement with a realistic alternative helps prevent accepting a deal simply to end discomfort.

Worked example

A community magazine negotiates with a printer. Its alternative is a smaller run from another shop for 600 units, arriving two days later. The current printer offers a larger run for 700. The editor compares distribution needs, timing, quality, and total cost rather than treating 600 as a magical maximum price. The alternative differs from the offered package, so translating the comparison into equivalent consequences is essential.

Use it carefully

Alternatives change and may be uncertain. An unconfirmed quotation or an unavailable venue should not be treated as a guaranteed option. Do not exaggerate alternatives to yourself or others. Consider the costs of walking away, including implementation and relationships, without assuming that any agreement is better than none. Negotiation frameworks are general planning tools; real contractual decisions may require professional advice.

FROM UNDERSTANDING TO ACTION

Put it to work.

Write one feasible alternative to a pending agreement and verify its availability. Compare three consequences on equivalent terms.

Choose one answer for each question, then check your reasoning.

1. A BATNA is:
2. Why not compare 600 and 700 alone?
