Relevance is a relationship

The idea

Relevant evidence connects to a fact that matters under the applicable dispute. The question is not whether information is interesting or emotionally powerful, but whether it changes the assessment of a consequential fact. Relevance is only one stage of evidence analysis.

Worked example

In a fictional dispute about whether a delivery arrived by noon, a timestamped gate log may help establish arrival time. A photograph showing the driver’s unusual hairstyle ordinarily does not answer that timing question. If identity becomes disputed, an image could acquire a different relationship to the issues. The evidence did not change; the fact being investigated did. A careful analyst states the proposition each item supports instead of presenting a pile of documents.

Use it carefully

Federal Rule of Evidence 401 provides the cited relevance test in its legal setting. Relevant evidence is not automatically admissible: other rules and legal circumstances can govern. The fictional examples omit authentication, reliability, prejudice, and procedural questions. This lesson is general education, not a ruling on evidence in a real case. Always identify the issue and governing framework before asserting a legal conclusion.

FROM UNDERSTANDING TO ACTION

Put it to work.

For a fictional late-delivery dispute, list three evidence items and write the precise fact each could help prove.

RETRIEVE. REASON. REMEMBER.

Knowledge check.

Choose one answer for each question, then check your reasoning.

1. Why might a gate log matter?
2. Can the same item become relevant when issues change?
